~Welcome home~

This blog is dedicated to my dear family who live many miles away, and to you dear ladies , who have a heart for keeping the home fires burning. You, who love and cherish your family, and have a desire to create a home that says "Welcome, you are loved and cared for."

My desire is that when you leave that you will be encouraged and know that you too are loved.

Meet Jasper the flea...
written with love by Sue January2, 2011..
This is how 2010 ended for us....
After dinner we talked, and watched a very funny, old movie ... You Can't Take It With You with James Stuart and Jean Arthur. At first dh and I thought we had chosen a not so good one, but as the story went on we really enjoyed it, so much so we want to watch it again.. It has a very profound message that we all should learn, hence the title of the movie. We get most of our movies from the public library to which I am most thankful for.

After the movie we went to see the town drop their flea at the stroke of midnight.

This is a very small town and has only come into existence this past year. I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout, and we did run into some old friends which was so nice.

The flea, whom we all are familiar with, was a great annoyance in this community many years ago. I mean an infestation like no other, so much so the community became known as Flea Hill.  It is quite an interesting story to which it would take to long to tell.
What a pleasant surprise to see my friend, Betty, she is  holding a souvenir of the event. I had not seen her in quite a while.

Anyhow when this community became a town last year the town officials really wanted to put the town on the map so to speak. lol So they came up with the idea of having a flea drop on New Years Eve, much like the one in the big city of NY, except they drop a ball! The had a contest to even name him, so meet Jasper the flea!

The mayor is a great artist, and a fine man, both dh and I went to school with him and his wife. he drew the design and others made it... thus the big flea drop of 2010!!
What I found so wonderful about being there among all these people was the real down home feeling I felt, it was like we were all family. There was no rowdiness, drinking at all., people fellowshipping and music playing, all wonderful people out celebrating the ending of a year and the welcoming in of a new one with family.
I felt so peaceful and joyous. They ended this celebration by having a prayer blessing on everyone there. Our souvenir, This one I like, the flea,  not dh Him I love, LOL , this  flea minds it's own business and doesn't bother anyone. LOL

We came home had hot chocolate watched one of our favorite shows... The Waltons.. went to bed.
To some this would seem to be a very boring night, but to us it was simply perfect.
I hope your evening was just as wonderful too.
Did  you have your black eye peas and greens yesterday? We did and oh! so good!
Love to you,
Sue

Thank you so much for the info on flea dropping. I think that is cute. I admit to being so mystified. I was saying words to myself and phrases and racking my brain because my grandparents were from Tennessee and Virginia and Mississippi and I could not even come up with anything in the memory banks of words I might have heard. So thank you and it does look like a very nice way to spend New Year's Eve. Thank you so much for sharing. About the only phrase I knew was "cute as a bug's ear."
Which would describe you. :)

A really fun New Year Flea tradition! A what a wonderful way to spend the evening!

I had to laugh. We have a group of five couples that we have been close to for over 25 years. We were all together the other night as one of the couples moved to Texas and was here visiting. Our precious friend Sandy was sharing that her daughter is due to have a baby boy any day. Much to Sandy's dismay, her daughter is planning to name the baby Jasper! We tried to find different pronunciations in other languages and even got the Bible out as Jasper is mentioned in the book of Revelations. We know Jasper will not sound so bad when Sandy sees that little guy but I don't think I should mention to her that Jasper is a famous Flea :)

Happy New Year! Love your cute Jasper the Flea story. I approve of his name. Thanks for stopping by at Here's a Hand. We had a birthday party for our son who turned 24! on New Year's Eve. Somebody shot off a few fireworks here in our local subdivision.

Dear Sue,
Your evening sounds perfectly perfect!! I mean what could be better than seeing a flea drop! Especially since the infestation of them is over - I'd like to hear how the town got rid of them!
I watched an old movie too - The Bishop's Wife. Have you seen it? It's fabulous! Old movies have a wholesomeness to them that the new ones are sadly lacking...
Many blessings to you and your family for this 2011!

It sounds like a wonderful time with family and friends to me. And, I love the Walton's! It's my favorite show as well. In fact, I have all nine seasons on DVD.

That sounded like a very fun and interesting evening! My hubby and I helped a local community college drama department put on, "You Can't Take it With You"! We were responsable for all the props. It was a really fun show.

What a great New Year's Eve.
I love how you had a prayer blessing for the town! That is precious :-)
And I must say I was intrigued to know what a flea drop is - I thought you meant donating things for a flea market!
Jasper's a very suave name for a flea that has such an undignified end lol! Very cute!
blessings..Trish

Hi Sue,

This is my kind of night, and I don't think it sounds boring at all. I grew-up watching the Walton's, I loved it. I'm happy to hear you had a wonderful night.

Dear Sue,

No, I am not as neat at all on the back. When I was a girl my Mom would always turn everything over and look at the back and say things like " The back needs to be as neat and the front." Then I saw a piece that Corrie Ten Boom used in that poem she used to say and it was just a mess. So I found that if you sew a piece of backing on your piece, no one sees. :)

I am glad you are feeling better. Do you think you just did to much at Christmas? I know I am deeply tired and feel like I just need one day to rest, but I have no idea when that will be. :) My kids are all going off in twenty directions and we are juggling cars.
Maybe the economy is picking up because now they all have jobs and I have people wanting to hire my 15 year old. I keep saying, I need one home to help me. :) He told me he is okay with that.
I am always so glad when you come by. Oh and every time I pick up a tool I have to over come my fear. :)
Get well soon, I will keep praying for you my dear friend. In your picture you are going to have more baby donkeys? How nice.

Prayers...how special...what a wonderful community you live in.
So glad I found the other side of your blogging.
Oh, Benjamin, of course, loved the pictures in the post before this...always a joy for him to see your animals.
