Pear tree lane Farmhouse

~Welcome home~

This blog is dedicated to my dear family who live many miles away, and to you dear ladies , who have a heart for keeping the home fires burning. You, who love and cherish your family, and have a desire to create a home that says "Welcome, you are loved and cared for."

My desire is that when you leave that you will be encouraged and know that you too are loved.

Sweating, but not to the "oldies"

Written by Sue, Thursday June 9, 2011                                                    high 90's, very hot and humid

I became interested in growing garlic many years ago, after learning of all of its health benefits, not to mention how much I enjoy using in my cooking.....

One day Mr P and I were visiting an older gentleman, he wanted to show us his herb garden, he had oodles of garlic growing and seeing my interest, pulled up some plants, gave them to me with instruction on how to plant them, as  they say "the rest is history." It just keeps multiplying, which I like.
I am very inquisitive when it comes to plants and am always trying new things.

I was out in the garden last week and was amazed at all of the bees,... bumble bees, honey bees and others refreshing their taste buds with the nectar from the blossoms. We can learn so much from our friends{the bees).

We have  really been looking forward to gathering our garlic, and didn't know how this intense heat was affecting it. As you can see we have put painting, and repairing  our fence on hold until vegetable season is over.{grin}
Lucy is always there supervising our work, she is so inquisitive about what goes on here at the farm Did I mention how much we love,and adore her?And she knows it, I am thinking she is planning ways to test us, {Not really she is such a sweetheart, always so obedient and eager to please}
Inside this bulb are many cloves, this is known as Elephant Garlic

"Whew"this is to much like work, you guys finish while I supervise"

Mr P. tying the bundles, notice how wet his shirt is from perspiration, sweat, this comes from living in a very humid climate, high heat along with a moist atmosphere brings sweat. and it was still mid morning, we try to keep ourselves hydrated, of course lots and lots of iced tea.
Ready to hang in a cool, dark, place, believe it or not we found such a place. After a few weeks of drying I put the bulbs in a nylon stocking, and always have extra to share.

Until next time,
Sue

A personal note to you dear Friends;
If you notice I am posting more frequently  this week it is because I am inside more, being a little lazy cooling off, I am trying to journal more often {even if only once or twice a week}about our life here at the farm, and to put it in a personal book form at the end of the year, like so many of you have done.  I was so impressed with yours to the point of being envious {grin} Since our children live so far away,  I am hoping to be able to give them something that will go on for a long time.

I know that each of you are like me so busy especially this time of year, and that your time is valuable too. I am always so humbled when someone takes the time to read the words I place here, and when you leave a comment I am blessed even more. And for this reason I try and make sure I reciprocate,{this is my personal choice} as I treasure your friendship as well as your thoughts. If I have ever not reciprocated a comment it was by sheer mistake. Once I post a new post I seldom go back to my older ones, and if someone was overlooked I so apologize.

I was thinking yesterday of how blogging has changed my life, in so many ways, I have connected with Ladies who have impacted my life so much, I truly admire your gifts, talents, love of God and families and treasure your friendship. Thank you for allowing me to visit in your homes and for taking the time to share your innermost thoughts and for allowing me to share mine too, and for all of your prayers, I count it a privilege to pray for you too.
Hugs,
Sue

You know that today was the first time I noticed you had changed the name of your blog. I like the new name. I love looking at all of your work too.
I too have been blessed beyond measure by the wonderful ladies I have met in the world of blogging.
Your comments always bless me and I love visiting with you.
I might have quit blogging if not for you my dear friend, so it was a good lesson, we never know how many people we can encourage each day by visiting and leaving a comment.
Who knew that we would have such friends all over the U.S. and Canada and how we would become such friends. Only God could do that, don't you think by letting us be born in this time. :)
Wow, sorry this is so long but your post really spoke to me.
Have a blessed day Sue,

Sue,
I just love coming over to visit you and your Guy (and Lucy) at your farm. I would never have thought of growing garlic but I do love coooking with it. I grew up on a derelict and run-down (right after WWII) chicken farm from age seven to age seventeen and I have always loved farms. I, too, am thinking of using some of my time to blog about my years on the farm to leave for my family. I will be looking forward to reading yours.

I just love your Lucy, I had a dog like this once, his name was Rebel but he was such a sweet dog. Love all this garlic..I too love cooking with it. You are a sweet blog friend and I feel as you do...if someone comments to me, I always return that kindness. I don't understand people who expect you o come comment but don't do it it return.

Repeatedly, you show what a gracious and kind person you are.

Just wanted to say that first...

Second, the garlic is cool looking. (That's cool as in groovy, neato, fab, of course...) I've never seen it coming out of the garden, only at the grocery store.

It's hot here, too, and we have the humidity as well. Last summer, my daughter went to Phoenix. She called me all gobstruck and exclaimed "It's 115 degrees, and no one is sweating!"

Grin.

Stay cool.
(And stay neato, groovy, and fab too)

Having just come in from watering my garden, I feel about the way Mr. P's shirt looks. Whew, it's hot & humid out there for sure. Lucy must really be warm with her fur coat on :).
Your garlic is wonderful. How nice it will be to use it for cooking in the coming months.
I feel the same way as you do about blogging and the wonderful people I have come to know thru the blog world. Your blog will make a wonderful book to share with your family. I love reading what you have to share and visiting your farm from the comfort of my air conditioned house :).

Sue,
Great job on the planters/urns. They look beautiful.
Love canning. It's wonderful. The garlic is amazing. I know it tastes great and is so good for you, but I don't care for garlic breath, and so....I avoid it in my own cooking. Not a good excuse.
And finally, Silly Uncle Joe. Great name!
Thanks for your visit. Your blog is always delightful to visit!

Hello again, haha, I think this is the second time today I got to visit you. The garlic is all very interesting to me. Looks wonderful. I too love garlic in almost everything, and it sure is great that it is good for you too. Your sweet dog is so pretty. I do know how you feel about blogging. It really has had such a profound effect on me as well. It is so wonderful to have met soo many truly great women that I would have never known otherwise. And the things I have learned as well. Today I made some burb cloths for the new baby from a tutorial I found in blogland. And the recipes I have tried when I shouldn't have, wink. I truly do treasure your friendship Sue. How I thank God for you! Hugs, Debbie

If you could say a prayer or two for me I'd really appreciate it. I have been having "strange" headaches and I am just not sure what is going on. Might be all the bending of my neck and back with my sewing, (but I don't think so) or it might be my medication for my blood pressure. Just don't know. And I hate dealing with anything when I am busy. I have a doc appointment, but not till the 22nd, so in the meantime, I need to just deal. THANK YOU!

Hi Sweet Sue! Love that you are growing garlic! I have learned that most of our garlic comes from the far east, and the conditions for growing it aren't good at all. I buy organic garlic, and I'm sure that's a little better, but not as good as growing your own. I just don't have a place for a garden here, unless we start cutting down trees, and I can't bring myself to do that.

Love you gal! It's great to visit. I haven't had time for visiting and have missed everyone.

Thanks for sharing from your heart! You are a treasure, sweetie!
Love and hugs,
Becky

I always enjoy reading every word you write. Your posts are so uplifting, Sue, and I know your family is going to love having these as a journal. What a great idea!

I really appreciate your sweet comments tonight. I'm still battling this old injury which is making blogging nearly impossible. I think I might be taking a summer sabbatical. Maybe give it a chance to heal and then come back when it's better.

In the mean time, in between time, sending you warm hugs across the miles...

XO,

Sheila

I really like garlic, too! (I don't like to sweat/perspire, though...so I may continue to buy my garlic bulbs at the grocery store.) Still, I am always inspired by your industry & beautiful garden.

As to your words about blogging, I totally agree. It HAS changed my life in so many ways.

God bless you today, Sue. I know your words and example will continue to bless your children and grands for years and years to come.

How wonderful to have such a great garden. Nothing like growing your own! We have so many deer it becomes a battle to keep them from eating things. I gave up!

Yippy! I can't believe I am finally able to comment! It has been ages, Sue, and I am so sorry for that. Blogger has not 'allowed' me to visit or comment on many of my favorite blogs ~ yours included. After your visit with me today, I thought I will give it another try. And here I am!!!
I, too, love garlic, but have never tried to grow it. It is on my 'to do' list.
Your garden is wonderful. Sure keeps us busy, doesn't it? But such great rewards!
I wish you could share a little of that heat with us in the PNW. We have only had a handful of days in the 70's this year. Lot's of rain, rain, rain! Wondering what kind of garden I am going to have this year! Stange weather everywhere ~ I'm thinkin' high food prices this winter!
Love your photo of the bumblebee on the garlic blossom! Like us ~ busy as a....

Hi Sue,

Wonderful post!
The weather sounds not so wonderful, but it looks like Mr. P and Lucy gave it a go. I love the photos. You know I think I've told you before, but just in case, You are an excellent photographer. I know it's not easy to take a great photo, it takes patience and a passion and clearly you have both.

I have experienced high temps and high humidity while on vacation once, and I could not go outside because I had trouble breathing in it.

I love visiting your blog (The Farm) it always brightens my day.

God bless you friend,
~Michele

It's always such a pleasure to stop by and see what's going on at your beautiful farm. If there was a Farm Beautiful magazine, yours would be on the cover.

I love seeing your pictures, Sue, but even more, I love your sweet and heartwarming stories. You are truly an inspiration, and I thank you for sharing your love of life and your faith with us.

I hope you get your camera back soon so we can see all the fruits (and vegetables) of your and Mr P's hard labors.
